History of the Gram Panchayat

A Gram Panchayat in Ponnani block, Ponnani taluk, Malappuram district. This panchayat, which includes 21 wards, has an area of ​​42.37 sq. km. Boundaries: Bharathapuzha (Puzhakkakara, Triprangode, Kuttipuram panchayats on the north and west, Puzhakkakara, Triprangode, Kalady panchayats on the west), Anakkara (Palakkad district), Vattamkulam panchayats on the east, Edappal, Eezhuvathuruthi panchayats on the south. Tavanur, located on the southern bank of the Nile, is known as 'Tapasanur' in the Puranas. Many caves and pottery collections have been found here that shed light on the prehistoric history. Tavanur, which is rich in caves, was once the cradle of Dravidian culture. Kozhipuram Madhava Menon and A.V. Kuttimaluamma laid the foundation of the national movement in Tavanur. The national movement gained strength in Tavanur under the leadership of K. Kelappan, who was known as the Kerala Gandhi. In 1948, Gandhiji's ashes were immersed in Tavanur as well.

Tavanur is one of the largest panchayats in Kerala. The proximity of the Bharathapuzha river plays a crucial role in making Tavanur an agricultural village. In addition to the main crop of paddy, pulses, sesame, vegetables, bananas, cassava, peppers, kavung and rubber are also cultivated here.

A unit of Keltron also operates in this panchayat. Small industrial units engaged in furniture manufacturing, rubber processing, etc. enrich the production sector of Tavanur. Coconut processing and leather shoemaking are notable cottage industries. Government of India

The Rural Institute, established for the development of rural higher education, offers diploma degree courses in engineering, agriculture and public health. The Rural Institute, which was run at Tavanur from 1963 to 1976, was later converted into Kelappaji Agricultural Engineering College with the recognition of Mannuthi Agricultural University. The Thirkkanapuram MES Engineering College, health care centers and libraries are functioning here. Kuttippuram railway station is one km. away from the panchayat boundary. The Thrissur-Kuttippuram highway and the new six-lane highway (NH66) pass through this panchayat.

Places of worship such as Cherutirunavaya Brahma-Shiva Temple, one of the rare temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, Tavanur Vasudevapuram Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, and Tavanur Juma Masjid are located in Tavanur Grama Panchayat.
